Intro to Concept Art
Course at Underpaint Academy with Ian Su.
In 2024 I took this online course with the artist Ian Su, where we went through the basics of character and prop art. The classes took several weeks so I'm putting here the results of my assignments
On the first week, the students were assigned to make between 30-50 thumbnais of characters with no theme at all. The idea was for us to dish out as many different characters as possible to start understanding what the work was about.
In my case, I started without being able to create much, many of the thumbs were already made designs or uninspired shapes and colors. However, I believe that as the days went on, I managed to loosen myself a bit and truly create designs quicker. No more than 10 minutes were spent on each one.
On week two, we were tasked with selecting a couple of prompts and designing three characters with props based on them. In my case I chose Miner + Deep Sea Leviathan and with that we needed to provide our references and final designs.
For week three, the assignment was to create a character with a clear chain of logic in their concept. In my case, created this ghostly pistolera, who shoots spectral horses from her guns, who are created by the power of her beating heart.
For week four, our objective was to redesign a creature or character from mtyhs and fables. My choice was Tiamat and I chose this way because I wanted the challenge of creating a more humanoid version of her, since the course was less about creature design.
On week five, the idea was to create a prop used by a main character in a story. It was supposed to be an unique item used by that character, however, in my story, people used company issued vehicles that are customizable, so I tried to make that apparent.
Finally, on the last two weeks, we were assigned to create a group of 3-5 characters, each showing a bit of their own personalities and designs and a main prop. I created this delivery company which is a front for a paramilitary private security group.
